I personally think the tempi in the '47 recording are more in keeping with supposedly what Mahler thought. As you say, the Adagietto is too often taken at a snail's pace and to my ears it often drags on. With Walter, it flows and doesn't sound like a funeral dirge.

I agree with you about the Mehta recording. A great recording with great playing that's very underated IMO. Warren Deck, Alessi, Smith, & Meyers provide some textbook examples of what brass playing can be.

BTW, you might want to take a look at the Yahoo & Mahler-L lists. There supposedly has been a discovery of a previously unknown copy of the 1899 edition of the 1st with Mahler's corrections.
