Now, if you want to hear an outrageously fast Mahler 5th (but with an ultra, ultra slow Adagietto), coupled with absolutely MIND BLOWING orchestral execution, then get the Hermann Scherchen/Philhadelphia Orchestra 5th that's been issued on Tahra. It's absolutely insane, not least of which for the outrageous cut that Scherchen makes in the middle movement scherzo. He knocks it down to nearly five minutes! Then he lavishes over the Adagietto for over 15 minutes, but you've never heard such string playing in your entire life (well, maybe you have). At the very least, this can become your Mahler "party record" to drag out when you want to give people who really know the work, something to laugh about.
