Interesting comments on Eb horns historically. Our Conn. community band owns a couple, a 4 valve York and a 3 valve Buescher. On the West Coast, where I grew up, in the '50s and '60s, Eb horns were far less common than BBb horns. In the Northern California conference in which my high school played, I cannot recall anyone using Eb sousaphones or tubas, except for elementary school bands. And it was the glory days of sousaphones: almost every school had King 1250s or Conn 20Ks. In fact, I don't think I ever saw a 'second line' (Pan American, American Standard, Holton Collegiate, etc.) sousaphone or a minor brand (e.g. Olds, Reynolds, Buescher) sousaphone before I came East to college.
