I think that solos should be played on a contrabass whenever possible. If the style of the music dictates a light bouncy sound or is technicaly challenging (range or otherwise) then use a bass tuba. The Williams is a tough choice because the first two movements are easily played (imho) on a contra, the third is pretty tough to keep light on one. But you have to admit...ain't nothing beats the sound of a giant tuba.
