Not all Heavy weight mouthpieces are equal. Nor are they always benificial. I have tried several over the last few years and never thought that the extra mass was particularly beneficial. In the case of the Helleberg style mouthpieces, R&S makes one that looks like a beer can. It is definitely a heavy weight, but on my horn it provided little or no advantage over a standard mouthpiece.

Recently, I tried (and bought) Mike Finn Mouthpieces which are heavy weights, but not ugly or overkill. The MF mouthpieces clearly warmed up and darkened the sound on my Mirafone 186. Sincerely, I decided to keep my 186 instead of selling it because of the drastic difference the mouthpiece made.

Obviously, everyone has their own personal needs and preferences on mouthpieces. Heavy weights never worked for me until I tried the Mike Finn.
