For me, the cost of the Doug Elliott was more than compensated by the consulting that came with it. A Doug Elliott by itself is expensive (though not nearly as expensive as a couple of the boutique brands), but it's quite a bit cheaper than any 14 mouthpieces. Doug's advice saves you from buying the other 13.

This reminds me of the story, told here before, of the famous mechanical engineer hired by the Singer Sewing Machine company to troubleshoot a large and complex production machine. He showed up with a piece of chalk, listened to the machine for a few minutes, and marked an X on the cover. He told the workers to disassemble it there and they'd find their problem, which they did. The factory boss was quite surprised to receive a bill for $10,000 from the engineer, and he asked for an itemization. Here's what he got:

1 Chalk, white___________________$1.00
1 Knowing what to do with it____$9,999.00
