Sven, you certainly are not alone. I am slightly older than you, and have been back at tuba for six months after decades off. I chose to find a good teacher even before getting an instrument. That was the best decision I could make. He listens to me, and assigns exercises to help me with whatever I need to do to reach the next step in my progress. Sometimes, he writes out exercises for specific purposes. I suggest you find a teacher who will give you lessons that are tailored to your particular needs. We are all different.
I am pleased with my progress, and I am having fun in a community band. I am working on some dixieland stuff, but am not yet ready for playing with a dixieland band. However, that is definitely in my future!
