I don't know if that would help too much. A softer reed would force the player to use less air (to balance), and a less focused embacher (too keep the reed from closing up), added to the softer reed's naturally brighter tone, not much help to the player at all. A better equipment change would be mouthpiece (I am assuming he has a plasic one), a large, round chambered, hard-rubber mouthpiece helps produce a much darker, rounded tone than a medium sized plasic one with a, somewhat, squared chamber.
