That's the beauty (or not) of the trombone...you see how far from where you like 2nd position you have to put the slide to get your A in tune, and you move the tuning slide about the same amount.
and for trombone novices...1st should be slightly out from all the way in...giving you room to tune (on the fly) up as well as down.
