if you're going to be playing string bass as well as elecric, I'd recommend using the 3 finger method, as described by Steve. I learned electric first, then when I started playing upright in college, I had a hard time playing in tune because I was always using the 4 finger method. I had to unlearn and then relearn using the 3 finger method.
