Dr. Sloan, being a distinguished member of the Academy, must have a beard of proper Ph.D. length, or they'll take his tenure away. Food is more important than playing the tuba.

I asked my teacher if my low-register problems were related to my beard (which is master's degree length), and he said "No, Absolutely Not, I can put that one away for you right now." He's a military musician, and is certainly making excuses for his own beard.

Jay Bertolet also has a beard, and it doesn't seem to get in his way.

But another frequent poster of unassailable playing credentials suggests that the bear might cause some problems.

So, take your pick.

Of course, you can grow a beard, and if it affects your playing, you can shave it off. It's a free experiment.
