Each year just before and just after Christmas there are a couple of extremely nice concerts in Carnegie Hall offered by the New York String Orchestra. This orchestra actually has winds and brass (even a tuba, if Mendelsohn "Midsummer", etc.) but they mostly play smaller-instrumentation symphonic works.

The orchestra mostly consists of outstanding conservatory students from around the U.S. and the world, and there is usually an extraordinary (often friend of the Stern family, obviously) soloist featured on each concert.
