Read up on all the horns and make an emotional decision about a, or several, horn(s). Next, decide on a sound you like (bright, dark, big, small) which will point you towards a 4/4 or 5/4 size horn. Valve configuration also, rotary or piston, 4 or 5 valve, silver or lacquer, tall bell or short bell, ergonomics for the hand. Last, but not least, are you looking for new or used? new mouthpiece? case? gig bag?

If you are smart, you will go with answers to most, if not all, the above questions. That way, you don't waste your time and get frustrated. Matt can be a big help to you, but he will be a bigger help if you've done some homework first.

Good luck and have fun.
