You shouldn't discount older Alexander F tubas. If you are willing to do a little slide pulling, you can get a great sound. My personal favorite out of the newer bunch was a Mirafone 181-6U that was at Brasswind. It had almost the same sound, but felt more like a small CC tuba. Just play a few different styles of tubas, ie. Rudy, Yamaha 822, B&S, all of them you can get your hands on. If your ever in southern Michigan you could even give my old Alex a blow (not for sale).
