I'm not sure if this fits into the discussion, but years ago when I was learning the trombone, I would equate the slide positions with the BBb tuba fingerings, which I knew very well. 1st slide position = 2nd valve, 2nd slide position = 1st valve, 3nd slide position = 1st & 2nd valve, etc. This was a very easy way for me learn the trombone positions. Perhaps this carries over into the different keyed tubas. I wouldn't know, because I play the BBb tuba exclusively. I do have an Eb tuba and I've been thinking about learning to read music for this horn.
