Whoever said that you have to play with a blatty sound when you're on a sousaphone? It's not the instrument's fault. Besides, a concert tuba's design doesn't help much with clarity & precision -- what seems crisp at the bell will sound reasonably clear to the audience.

I'm agreeing with Mark below. If you play & march wrong, you'll hurt your playing. Just as long as the difference between the usual band/drum corps sound and the symphonic sound is recognized, a player will know to shift gears when going back indoors.

Additionally, you'll find symphonic players who make extremely loud dynamics part of their practice routine. A loud-playing band could be another high-volume practice tool, reinforcing timing, intonation, and dynamic changes. Playing loud is one thing; playing loud on time and in tune is a skill worth having for when it's needed.
