When I played under Igor Strawinsky around 50 years ago he said that the largest possible BBb (or lower) tuba should be used. We ( The Pittsburgh Symphony ) recorded it in 1954 and a high fi magazine gave it a poor review because of poor recording technique and a dog barking outside the Syria Mosque during the famous bassoon solo. I played 2nd tuba on an extremely large King tuba (0.93" in the valves) and a 24 inch bell. The magazine said there was a really terrific low tuba.
