It depends on how the plating is done. If they put a strike coat of copper, and then silver (followed by gold), then they can fill up the nicks. They may also change the shape of the mouthpiece if they aren't careful.

I'd probably just buff the rim down to smooth, and have it plated with the normal thickness (read: thin) of copper, silver, and then gold. My understanding is that the copper aids in adhesion of the silver, and the silver provides something smooth and non-poisonous when the gold wears off.
