In general it's a good piece to have, even if you can't play it right away. In previous surveys on this group about standard pieces, the V-W comes up consistantly as *the tuba concerto that you have to know*. Work at it, and don't be discouraged if it's beyond you for now (as a college student I'm just reaching the point where I can play *most* of it :), because you'll definitely be returning to it later.
Range-wise, it goes well above middle C quite frequently, especially in the second movement. A word of advice, don't kill yourself trying to play high... take it easy and let it come naturally.
On the other hand, if you nail it cold at first read, more power to you :)
