Is the silver simply wearing off or do you also have deep pits forming in the brass. Some folks can play on raw brass instruments for years without trouble but for some reason I tend to eat through the brass if I don’t keep a good finish on it(Acidic skin I guess). My repairman suggested putting a patches over the bare pitted spots on my tubas and even suggested a sterling silver patch if I wanted to make the silver horn look pretty. I have a friend who also has a tendency to wear through his horns and actually developed some holes. It might not be a bad idea to have protection on the bare spots if you have pitting etc.…

If you do not have pitting in the metal and have simply worn away the finish due to too many hours of practice, rest, drink a beer and ignore all of this advice! ; )
