Believe it or not time spent in the low range can have a tremendous positive affect on you sound and ease of play in all registers and always helps the high notes in less that subtle ways.

This is a common occurance and not at all weird. Jacobs briefly discusses the topic in the 1973 masterclass recording available in the tips section of this page.

My advice: purchase a copy of the Rochut for trombone and learn to play the various etudes musically where written, down one octave, and down two. Always spend atleast as much time on the lower two octaves as you do up high. The high notes will come naturally and really aren't of much practical use anyhow.
