Yes, he was, but there was a recording session involved where they re-recorded much of the music. As was often the case. As I understand it: there would be one recordng of the music used in the film and another one with a more complete representation of the score.(Steven Spielberg thought it was too complicated and insisted that the "signal" be only 5 notes.) If you take a listen to track 24 of "The Collector's Edition Soundtrack" of Close Encounters
{Arista 07822-19004-2} That's what Williams wanted. Rumor has it that he wrote it with Mr. Johnson, specifically, in mind. It's some cool stuff.
