I really think that the word tubaist is pretty much self explanatory, much more so than tubist. The English language is such a mish-mosh of regularly-broken "rules" that ease of comprehension and clear function should be the rule in cases like this. Also, consider the occasional problems that the proper pronunciation of the term for players of the piano can cause.
