I heard the same thing when I was in high school. They even offered me a full ride when I was a junior (after playing the tuba for only 6 months). I think this shows not how good I was, but how desperate they were. You will not benefit from going to school at UNLV nearly as much as driving 6 hours and going to school in Southern California. USC, UCLA, and CSUN all have good band programs that are at least as good as UNLV if not far superior. Plus, if you go to USC or UCLA you will study with one of the greatest teachers of our instrument, Tommy Johnson (just remember who Gene Pokorny got most of his instruction from). Bottom line, you'll be much better off getting lessons from a reputable teacher than relying on an ensemble to make you a better musician.
