As a long-time bass guitarist, I can tell you that it's much harder to hear your exact ptich with the treble turned down, even when tuning. When there's a fair amount of ambient noise, I have to pop notes or pick very near the bridge to be able to get a trebly enough tone to be able to tune by ear.

As for listening to the effect of out-of-tune bass while playing, a string out of tune affects every note played on the string, and it comes to a listener's attention more quickly than a note here and there out of tune. Even so, a bassy or dubby tone on bass guitar can get away with more intonation flaws than a brighter tone.

I have noticed for some time now that I can play pedal notes with my Cerveny 601 that are somewhat out of tune but that don't sound out of tune (at least to me) when playing with a group. However, the flat E and Eb played from the fifth partial (and two octaves higher than the pedals) stand out as distinctly out of tune.
