I have experienced this along a parallel line of thinking, as a string bass player. As timbre seems easier to adjust on an amplifier, I have noticed that tuning is easier when a brighter sound is used. In a simular vein, most of the better jazz upright players use a brighter tone to cut through the bass drum sound. This also makes them easier to tune with in that context.

When I play bass bone or something else of a higher range, I find it easier to tune with the bass instruments that use a brighter tone.

Of course, I love to hear the darker sounds associated with large tubas and string basses.
