I have a 9-key C bass ophicleide. It sounds like a cross between a euphonium and a bassoon to me. Some listeners say it sounds a bit more harsh than the euphonium. I played the Guy-Ropartz "Andante and Allegro" on it last week on a faculty recital at one of the Universities where I teach. It's a real challange, a very difficult instrument to learn and play, and it gives an enlightening perspective on the time before tubas. Great fun!
