I tend to disagree with your suggestion that tension will arise if you as a student push to (or beyond) the level of your teacher. I have students that do some things a lot better than I do. Does it piss me off? No. Don't be silly. The ability of musicians (or athletes, or mathematicians, or computer programmers) grows exponentially with each passing generation. It will continue to do so forever and ever, amen. The challenge as a teacher then becomes, how far can I take this student. Therein lies the reward!
