Hey Matt, it's great to see students concerned enough to post such good questions, and nice to see such helpful responses, too! One thing that hasn't been mentioned explicitly, though, is that they want to pick the players who can play the Part the best. On the day of the concert, you and 159 other young musicians will be playing the music off the paper, a few dropped octaves here and there will work nicely, but imagine if the trumpets decide to take everything up, or the saxes decide to slur everything instead of stacato, or the trombones add a tasty gliss, or the percussion adds a few cymbal and gong crashes just because they can... you get the idea.
Play what's written, just play it better (with more expression and conviction) than the other guys!
