It is possible to make a living playing the tuba, but to do so one must be a far sight better than decent! There is very little work for tubists in most cities and only the very best one or two players get enough work to eak out a living. I recently moved to the Seattle / Tacoma area after winning a position with the Tacoma Symphony, a "per service" orchestra and am currently hunting for a REAL job. I feel very fortunate that I have the opportunity to play with a very good orchestra even though I will have to make my living outside of music.

This post is in no way meant to discourage anyone from majoring in performance. If you know that you're good and somebody in the music industry who you trust agrees, then go for it! I tend to wish now that I had a degree in something that could possibly get me a job, because for me now, my music performance degree isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Good luck with your decision,

Paul
