I’ll echo the suggestion about the Reserves or the Guard. My son is just finishing Basic at Fort Jackson. He’s in the Guard and will start college in January. With the tuition and housing assistance, and the guard pay he has most of his expenses covered. He looked at all the services and decided that this route gives him more control over his education options. Sure the active services will help you go to college while your in, BUT If you’re stationed in East Timor the local university may not be a desirable option. Get your Education NOW while you can. College after the service does not always happen especially if there happens to be a little honey and some rug-rats involved. Another benefit is the Guard issued horn ( this unit uses Miraphones) that you won’t have to purchase. Talk to the people in the unit near you. Find the unit online ( http://bands.army.mil/guard/default.asp ) and contact them yourself. The recruiter knows less than you do about the band programs. Another advantage is the Training you will receive in Basic serves as a great transition from living at home and "independent" college life. And yes, they will teach you how to make up your bed.
