A college audition goes two ways. Not only are you being judged, but so is the school at which you are applying. Take this more seriously than you would purchasing a home, and a whole lot more than a used car (really, you wouldn't but a car sight unseen, would you). If you did but a used car and discovered it was not all you had hoped, you have options. You can take the time to do the maintenance and repairs and make it into a fine automobile, trade it off for another used car (no guarantee that old problems won't be present with new car), or decide that all cars are inherently crap and put up with it and tell everyone you meet how bad your car is.

It is really less about where you go and how you go about getting there, than who you are when you get there and who you are when you leave. There is an old poster which states "while they partied-you practiced...Now it's your turn to play"
To answer your original question, go if you can, send tapes if you can't, and turn the school you choose into a world class institution by becomming the greatest tuba player of all time!
