It would sure be nice to know the provenance of any horn that comes up for sale. I know all the previous owners of my York, which include such heavy-hitters as Oscar LaGasse and Chris Hall, and that definitely adds to the value as far as I'm concerned. But I know only one previous owner of my Miraphone, and I'm not sure I want to know that it was once owned by the East Barnyard Independent School District.

Such provenance only has value when the previous owners make a good story.

I have a collection of antique clocks, some of which have become valuable. Engraving of any sort would ruin that value. If something has collector value, then the more original its condition, the better. But you can't predict what will have collector value beforehand.

Of course, most of us don't buy horns for their collector value, we buy them for the way they play.
