For the last two summers I have played in an italian feast band here in Chicago (aka Mafia Band, complete with thin black ties and a guy named Caliendo). The festivals that we play at all have ridiculous amounts of firecrackers going off as (probably) closer than legal proximities. So I complained (light-heartedly) about this, and he say "well that's nothing." Apparently he knew a trombone player (or someone who knew a trombone player) who, as a practical joke, filled one of the other bone player's mute with about 1/4 stick of dynamite. Needless to say, when it exploded in his horn, the bell split apart like in loony toons and he was knocked to the floor. If it actually happened, you guess is as good as mine, but if it's true, brass instruments can explode :-)
