If at all possible, I'd say go with the in-person audition over a tape. There is much more than just hearing an etude or scale to a worthwhile audition. You'll want to talk to the ajudicators, and they'll want to talk to you. In order to give them exactly what they want, you should be there in person. I'm a third year student at the University of California Santa Barbara and I feel that the sole reason I was accepted was my in person audition. It was totally different than anything I would have sent on tape and, due to the impression I made by just talking to the staff here, they were able to get me into this school (which recieved something like 20,000 new student applications for this school yeah). So.. in person, I think, is always better if at all possible. 3-4 hours isn't bad. They may actually require you to come since you are that close.
