I used to use chap-stick. After a few years I found that I didn't need it any more. Just playing every day seems to prevent chapping. (A plastic rim helps too.) But I kept the chapstick in my pocket for years to lubricate my fingers for playing string bass. Eventually I found that I didn't need it for that either. I just wipe the fingers across my forehead once before playing the bass.
Then last year I had a double gig on tuba with my nose already sore from kleenex, leaving my chops a bit sore. So I'm looking around the bathroom at 2AM for some kind of lotion to put on, and I decided to try some "cucumber face lotion" that my wife sometimes uses. WOOO! big mistake. that stuff really wakes you up.
