I have a similar background. I have been with three teachers after starting to play again based on where I am living at the time. All three have been very helpful. Currently I am with Dennis Askew. His philosophy is that I want to enjoy my musical experiences and improvements in my playing will lead to greater enjoyment. We meet about every third week since he is 90 miles away and he gives me assignments that take that long for me to prepare. At times he lets me go my own way i.e. if I feel a particular area needs work he lets me concentrate on that area. For my situation, his approach is ideal.

I look for the following:
1). Someone who plays the way I would like to play(that is what he/she will be teaching).
2). Someone who has no bias against amateurs. (Yes, I've hit that)
3). Someone who likes to teach.

At age 60, I am not Dennis' oldest student. Go for it.
