Sorry guys, I just re-read your posts, and that should have been "yes and yes." I think we're all trying to get at the same thing here, and that is matching the right instrument (with its particular sound color) with the right musical situation. Being that there are as many different instruments as there are musical situations, that leaves us lots of options, and that is why professionals have lots of horns!
BTW, since I'm kind of new here, is what I was talking about in my previous post (registers of instruments) the same as or closely related to what other people refer to as "the F tuba sound" and "the BBb sound"? Or am I just trying to assign a quantitative value to a qualitative condition again? (guess I'll have some prune juice after all, thank you.)
