Former members of the U.S. Army Field Band's tuba section
include Harvey Phillips, Ron Bishop, Ev Gilmore, Ed Livingston,
Dave Zerkel, Bob Pallansch, and Tim Northcut. This is a "road"
job; with three tours a year. There is a minimum of "sousaphone"
work ... mainly being the lead band for Inaugural parades and various
special occasions. Upon completion of a successful audition and basic
training, you will earn the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6) in the U.S.
Army and be permanently assigned to the Field Band which has four
separate performing components. They are (1.) the Concert Band which
uses three tubas; (2.) the Soldiers' Chorus; (3.) The Jazz Ambassadors,
a 19-piece big band; and the Volunteers, a pop/rock group. The Soldiers'
Chorus tours with the Concert Band, while the other ensembles tour
separately. If you would like to travel, this may be the right job for
you. While in the Field Band, I performed in all 50 States; Puerto Rico;
the U.S. Virgin Islands; Canada; Mexico; Okinawa; South Korea; Japan;
India; France; Germany; Belgium; and the Netherlands. The band and chorus
recently have performed with the Boston Pops, Detroit Symphony, and
Cincinnati Pops orchestras. As I was leaving the band, the well-traveled,
band-owned Mirafone 188's were replaced by MW 2165s and a Yorkbrunner.
The rarely-used sousaphones are silver-plate Kings.
