In the UK the brass band movement tends to dictate the fashion for mouthpieces and availability is also a very important factor. Certainly the Denis Wick range is very popular.....even prevalent.

In the 1970s/80s there was a strong fashion for the Bach 24AW lead by John Fletcher's usage of this for many years. The Wick 3 is supposed to have been inspired by this although it has little resemblance. However interestingly John NEVER used any of the Wick range much to the consternation of Denis Wick who of course played a few feet away from John from 1968 to 1987. John's reason was always the same: "they give me face-ache"!

Denis Wick by the way was a superb principal trombonist, an extremely dominant player in a large orchestra and an excellent soloist as well. Listen to him on the LSO recording of Berlioz Symphonie Funebre et Triomphale (long 2nd movt solo) or in Mahler 3rd Symphony. There's never been anyone to touch him for sheer presence and immensity of sound. He had a huge influence on John's own playing.
