Somebody told me I could remove the laquer from a trombone bell by running it thru the dishwasher. To test that hypothesis I found a piece of sousaphone with the same age and brand (king) and ran it thru a full cycle with heated drying, the works. The laquer came thru completely unaffected. I have seen competent repairmen use a torch to re-solder a joint without damaging the lacquer. That stuff can really take the heat. Don't worry about a little hot water. If you are not sure, test it on one tuning slide.
