I've walked into plenty of middle schools with big old Conns and Bessons on tuba stands. I don't follow the theory of "It takes a lot of air to play one of those..."
It takes well-controlled air to play flute, tuba, sax, etc. The "fatness" of a tuba is merely the amplifier and a tone modifier, IMO.
