what usually helps me gain clarity in the lower register is to add just the slightest amount of pressure to the upper lip. Although, this method must be used with caution because too much pressure, in addition to hurting your chops, will cause the sound to get really edgey (subsequently causing the conductor to stab you with his/her baton). This seems to work for me though. Also, be sure that you have a good air supply, but don't overblow.
