The 3J has a larger bell, 18" I think. A subtle difference is that the 3J has felts on the top of the valve caps whereas the 2J has felts under the buttons. The 3J has the heavier braces that are found on the old 20 series tubas and sousaphones and support rings (for lack of a better term) where the inner slide enters the outer slide. Oh yes, one other thing, the 3J will most likely have "3J" stamped under the Conn logo on the front of the bell.
