That was also because the playing scenes involved Grimethorpe Colliery Band, so it really was only the actors whose faking, valve-sync, etc., was very unconvincing.
P.S. When I was a brass-bandy, us tuba players used instrument cases only very rarely, so I thought the "naked horn" scenes were another example of some "homework" having been done.
