If you are unable to reach the bottom valve cap with a rawhide mallet. You can place a long dow stick on the stuck cap. And gently tap it with the mallet. Make sure that you tap all around the edge of the valve cap and not just in one spot. This has worked every time I have tried it. I personally have a rotary valve horn, but the principle is the same.
