Gee Carl, I dunno. Given that the trend for orchestral instruments seems to be the big 6/4 CC "monster blaster", I think our poster might be disappointed if he thought he could get that type (6/4) of sound out of a 983.

FWIW, I do own and play a 983 and have used it in band, but only where there was sufficient support in the section. Otherwise the 5/4 BBb comes along and I practice heavy breathing (as in "we could really use a little more tuba right here").

For ensemble, solo and quintet work, the 983 is great and I love it. But it's not going to knock the plaster off the walls.
