I agree with Dan and Marty, excellent points. Another thing to consider is taking lessons someone that plays a lot of professional jobs in your area (on a fairly regular basis is best). This is a way to demonstrate your ability to people that will most likely need substitutes or be asked to recommend someone for a job. If you get a call, then it is up to you to show the conductor or contractor what you can do. Remember, many of us that play professional jobs needed a break at some time to be able to show what we can do.
