Lost the URL, but I recall that there was some serious research done on rotary vs. piston and smoothness of slur. The findings supported the idea that the valve type had less to do with the smoothness than the distance from the mouthpiece to the valve cluster. I wonder if the "funny looking" Miraphone 189 with the slanted rotary valve cluster might not have playing characterstics more in common with its piston-valved relatives.
Just idle speculation on my part...
