A musician colleague (who is also a qualified brass and ww repairer) told me that black lacquer IS worse (in terms of the horn's response, etc.) than clear or slightly gold tinted lacquer... for the simple reason that it takes MORE coats to get the desired colour (just like paint, when the starting colour and finishing colour are radically different). -- The result is a thicker total coat on the horn than would ever be required for clear or slightly tinted lacquer, or silver plating, for that matter.

Still, as a bit of fun on a fun horn, it's an eye-catching strategy.
